visaforchina.cn before submission.1. Do Expats & Foreigners in Hong Kong Need a China Visa in 2026?
Before filling out forms, check whether your ordinary passport qualifies under China's Unilateral 30-Day Visa-Free Policy (officially extended through December 31, 2026) for tourism, business, family visits, or transit:
| Passport / Status Category | Short Trip (≤ 30 Days: Tourism / Business / Family) | Long Stay (> 30 Days), Work (Z), Study (X1), or Key Rule |
|---|---|---|
| UK (British Citizen), Canada, Australia, New Zealand | Visa-Free 30 Days | Must apply for a visa if staying > 30 days, working (Z), studying (X1/X2), or journalism (J). Note: BNO passports are NOT eligible! |
| Most EU / Schengen States (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, etc.), Switzerland, Norway, Japan, South Korea | Visa-Free 30 Days | Direct high-speed rail (West Kowloon ➔ Shenzhen/Guangzhou), ferry, land border, or flight entry up to 30 days. (Check official MFA list: a few EU states such as Czechia & Lithuania remain excluded and require a visa.) |
| Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, UAE, Qatar | Mutual Visa-Free | 30 days visa-free under bilateral mutual exemption agreements for ordinary passports. |
| United States (US Passport) | Visa Required | US citizens must apply for an L/M/Q2 visa (often eligible for 10-year multiple-entry!), unless routing via 240-hour transit to a 3rd region. |
| Philippines, Indonesia, India, South Africa, Pakistan, Nigeria | Visa Required | Must apply via CVASC Wan Chai (including foreign domestic helpers accompanying employers to Shenzhen/Mainland under L/S2 rules). |
| BNO Passport (British National Overseas) | Not Eligible | Chinese ethnic HK residents use a Home Return Permit (回鄉證); non-Chinese HKPRs should apply for the 5-Year Mainland Card or use another foreign passport. |
Hong Kong ➔ Shanghai ➔ Tokyo or London ➔ Beijing ➔ Hong Kong). A simple round-trip Hong Kong ➔ Shenzhen ➔ Hong Kong does NOT qualify as transit—you need a full Chinese visa!2. Non-Chinese HK Permanent Residents: 5-Year Mainland Card vs. Sticker Visa
If you hold Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card (HKPR) status without Chinese nationality, you now have two distinct options to enter Mainland China:
| Feature | 5-Year Mainland Travel Permit Card (非中國籍港澳永久性居民來往內地通行證) | Standard Chinese Sticker Visa (L / M / Q2 / Z via Wan Chai CVASC) |
|---|---|---|
| Who Qualifies | Non-Chinese Hong Kong Permanent Residents (HKPR) only | Any foreign resident (Employment/Dependant/IANG/TTPS HKID) & tourists in HK |
| Where to Apply | China Travel Service (CTS / 中旅社) centres (after getting HK Immigration nationality notice) | CVASC Wan Chai (visaforchina.cn online review + Causeway Centre drop-off) |
| Border Crossing & Stay | 5 years unlimited entries (up to 90 days/trip) + fast e-Channel automated gates! | Single, Double, 6-Month, 1-Year, or 5–10 Year Multi-Entry (manual passport lane) |
| Processing Time & Fee | ~20 working days after CTS submission · HK$260 first-time card fee | 4 working days Regular / 2–3 working days Express (best for urgent trips!) |
| Photo Requirement | 33×48mm + Official Networked CTS Barcode Receipt (相片檢測合格回執) | 33×48mm COVA Digital JPEG (40–120KB) + Glossy Print (no barcode needed) |
3. China Visa Photo Requirements (33×48mm Print & COVA Digital Upload)
China's automated biometric check on visaforchina.cn is notoriously strict. Standard UK/EU (35×45mm), HKSAR (40×50mm), or US (2×2 inch) photos will fail the COVA aspect-ratio & head-crown algorithm immediately:
Width 33mm × Height 48mm on glossy photo paper (matte paper rejected). Head width must be 15–22mm; head height (chin to crown) 28–33mm; top margin above hair 3–5mm.
JPEG (.jpg) format, RGB true color (24-bit), exact pixel dimensions 354×472 px to 420×560 px, and strict file size between 40 KB and 120 KB.
Both ears and full eyebrows MUST be completely visible (tuck hair behind ears!). Remove eyeglasses, earrings, necklaces, and facial piercings to avoid instant AI rejection.
Pure shadow-free white background (#FFFFFF). Never wear white, cream, or pale grey tops—wear a dark collared shirt or blazer for crisp shoulder contrast.
CVASC reviewers compare your uploaded visa photo directly against your passport bio-data page and previous Chinese visas. If your passport was issued over 6 months ago and you upload the exact same photo, your Stage 1 Online Review will be flagged "Modification Required — Photo older than 6 months", delaying your Visa Application Certificate by several days!
